We had a blast at this year's HURA TAHITI. In June, we traveled to Southern California to compete under the name O Hina'aro Nui. This year, we were entrusted by our good friends Desiree Woodward Lee (director) and her husband, Kristopher Lee (lead musician) to create the tumu parau (theme) for their Hura Tau group entry at Hura Tahiti. Our theme was titled "Te Umuai", which illustrates the traditional marriage customs of Rurutu island, homeland of my maternal grandfather, Papi Teaia Naea.
We also wrote & translated O Hina'aro Nui's very 1st 'Ahupurotu (Mehura) song entry as well as the group's tumu parau (theme) for the Traditional and Creation Drumming categories. O Hina'aro Nui did very well & took home a handful of prestigious awards including 1st Place in the Music category for our 2 original 'aparima, 1st Place in both drumming categories, along with a few others. Congratulations and thank you to all of the dancers, drummers, musicians, actors/actresses and families for your love + support. It was an honor & a privilege to share the Tuha'a Pae (Australes) culture with you all.
